Who doesn’t like the classic British scones, the dough-based dessert served with cream and jam has become a staple for the events menu in our family. What has been a great help in preparing the scones is the air fryer. Making scones in the air fryer is easy and reduces the time significantly, and here is how you can do the same.

Scones In Air Fryer
Equipment
- Air Fryer
- Parchment paper or air fryer basket liner.
- Mixing bowls
- Whisk
- Fork
- Pastry cutter
- Measuring spoons
- Cooling wire rack
Ingredients
- 2/3 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups all purpose flour (can substitute it with 450g self-raising flour)
- 4 tbsp baking powder
- 1/4 fine-grind sea salt (can substitute it with kosher salt)
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar (can substitute it with 50g of caster sugar)
- 1 large egg (beaten)
- 1 cup milk
Instructions
- Start by combining the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in a medium-sized bowl.
- Grate cold butter in the same bowl and mix it well together using clean hands. Make sure the butter is properly mixed with the dry ingredients. Here, you will see the mixture getting the texture of coarse sand.
- Now, make a hole in the center and add a lightly beaten egg to it. Gently beat the egg using the fork and combine the flour and butter mixture with the egg.
- Gradually add the cream to the mixture and keep beating it with the fork until you see a dough forming.
- Next, transfer the dough to a pastry mat or a working surface. Now, start gently folding the dough and press it together by gathering the loose end of the dough. You do not have to harden the dough for too long.
- Once you are finished kneading the dough, press it into a big rectangle. Lightly flour the surface and use a rolling pin to flatten the dough. The desired thickness is around ½ inches.
- Now, take the 2-2½ biscuit cutter and press it down to make scones from the dough. Do not twist the cutter, rather just press it down and lift it up. Keep repeating this until you have no area left on the dough; it will usually leave you with 4 to 5 scones.
- Push together the leftover dough and form a 1-inch thick square and repeat the process to cut more scones. Continue doing this until you have utilized all the dough. At the end, you will get around 8 scones, each with 1 inch thickness.
- Now that we are done with the dough, it's time to preheat the air fryer at 400 degrees Fahrenheit or 200 degrees Celsius for around 10 minutes.
- Lightly brush the top of each scone with cream and make sure to not spill it over the edges, or it will hinder the scones from rising high.
- Transfer the scones to the air fryer basket in a single layer and maintain a distance between the scones. Cook them for 8 to 10 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit or until you see a golden brown top of the scone.
- Please note that you may have to cook the scones in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer. Serve them with clotted cream or jam, and enjoy with friends or family.
Nutritional Value of Air Fryer Scones

Recipe Variations
Today, there are numerous variations of the air fryer scones. Here are some of them you can try.
- Add ½ cup of dried raisins to the cream to get raisin scones.
- For cinnamon scones, use the above-mentioned recipe and just add 1 tsp of ground cinnamon to the flour.
- Add one cup of cheddar cheese (grated) after you have mixed the butter into the flour. It will give you cheese scones. Skip the sugar in this recipe.
Can You Store it in the Fridge?
Yes, of course; you can store the leftover scones in an airtight container in the fridge or even at room temperature. They are expected to stay fresh from 3 to 5 days at room temperature and 5 to 7 days in the fridge.
Though it is not a good idea to freeze them for a longer period, many people still store them in the freezer. Usually, scones will stay fresh for up to 3 months. However, I have tried it many times and the scones really dried out in the freezer, disturbing the texture.
